The death is announced by cable oE Admiral Sir James Elphinstone Erskine, in his seventy-third year. The death is announced from CHrisfcchurch of the Rev. James Maxwell, Presbyterian minister of that city. The deceased was 69 years of age, and leaves a widow, one son, and five daughters. Mr A. F. Tosswill, of the Dannevirke railway staff, has been promoted to the position of stationmaster at Mauriceville,
A pleasing ceremony was performed at last night's meeting of the Masterton Bowling Club; when the Chairman (Mr J. Whittaker) presented Mr D. Guild, who has had the control of the greens, with a case of pipes as a token, -df-fcne appreciation of tr> the- Club, The, Chairman~*eferred ,in - eulogistic terms to the energetic and valuable'services rendered to'the Club by Mr Guild. The recipient acknowledged the gift, stating that it had always been a pleasure to him to do what lay in his power to assist the Club.
