TUBERCULOSIS IN CATTLE.

ACTIVE MEASURES BEING TAKEN.
In a communication to the editor of the Wairarapa Age, Mr C. J. Reakes, Chief of the Veterinary Division of ■ the Agricultural Depart--mcjit, states that the officers of his. Department are exercising an active supervision over the dairy herds of. the Wairarapa. He does not think, that the herds of the Wairarapa areaffected with tuberculosis to anyibhiiig like 'the .same extent that they are m other parts of the DominionAlt, the request .of Mr R. J. Dagg, •several-herds were recently inspected; by Mr Howard, a veterinarian of the Department. Of twenty-two .cows, inspected, only one was found to bediseased. This was from a herd of" nine. The cows of six other ownerswere entirely free from disease. Mr Reakes recogiiiises the importance of the systematic inspection of herds,, and states that this will be carried: out. In the meantime he has given instructions to the officers of the -Department in Mnssterton to procure saorijpfes of the milk which is being supplied by the dai-ryanem of the town. These will be "subjected to a test, extending over several weeks, at the Government Laboratory at Wallaceville, and the result will be furnivshed in. due course to- the Age. Mr Reakes urges the adoption) of a proper system of pasteurization at all factories. .
