REPRESENTATIVE MATCH.

SOUTH WAIRARAPA (19) v. NORTH WAIRARAPA (3). A very good gathering of spectators witnessed tho representative match, South v. North Wairarapa, .at the old showgrounds, Mastertpn, on urday afternoon. Rain fell throughout practically the whole of the ganiij. and the ground was in a very sloppy condition. The teams were as follows: North.—Full back, W. Flaws; thi--o quarters. N- Chamberlain, B. Chamberlain. li. •Johns) five-eighth, J. Hanley; half, Osman; wing forwards. A. Ro S? , L. Welch; front tow, A. Newlands, King: second row, A. Miller, Wilkinison, McLachlan; back row, McLachlan and Spackman. . South.—Full • back, Masson"; threequarters, Mason. Thompson; August; \ five-eighths, N. McKenzie, C. Groube; half, F. Groube; wing, Preshaw; front row. Barry and Johnson: second row, H. McKenzie, P. Bond, H. A. Hodge; j, back row, Brough and Desmond. North played in black jerseys, and South wore green. North won the toss, and elected to play with, the wind and rain at their backs. From the kick-off play hover- t ed. round the half-way line, but tho i Macks did not lose much time in fore- j ing their ooponents well on to their j goal line. F. Groube, however, broke through the attack i and was getting well away, but Flaws isecured the leather, and returned it to the greens' 25 yards'? line. The black forwards continued as they started, and before long were awarded a free kick. Spackman 'had a goal,, but the ball was already too wet for good kicking. This was followed bv.a* great rush by N. McKenzie, but Flaws cleverly saved the situation with his reliable line kicking. It was a very long time bofore Qouth again crossed the half-way line. The vigorous onslaughts of the North forwards, of whom Spackman, Ross. Milder ;>nd Newlands shone out brilliantly, kept the green backs busily defending their line. But for the clever tactics of N. McKenzie, F. Groube and Masson. with tho islippery ball, North would have£corod several time's. The greens were compelled to force down on at least four occasions. Spackman hr>d ' another shot at goal from a mthcvult angle, but the ball scarcely roso from the. ground. From a line out .'in the I greens' line., Miller got the ball and j dropped over tho line, scoring the j first try of the match amid; loud cheers from the oiiliapkers. Other unsuccessful attempts were made to break through the defence of the South, until just a few minutes'before tho half 1 time whistle went, when tike greens, by the work of H. McKenzie and Barry, got well within the North team's territory. North had now to take their turn at defending,' and " in. this respdet Hanley,-Osman and B. Chamberlain excelled/themselves.' It was' afteri some hard forward' .scrambling that Barry succeeded in crossing the line, thus equalising the score. Mas- . son failed to convert. Half-time sounded with South still attacking. On the. resumption of play South immediately assumed the aggressive, and gavo the blacks no opportunity to attack. The safe tackling of Flaws stopped a try being scored just a few i minutes after ithe start of the spell, i The, whole fonVardpaclc of the greens [ made the pace very hard, and in a | .shbrfc time Barry-again scored. Later j N. McKenzie scored, and Hodge succeeded! in converting the try, from a Very difficult angle, 'jln frpite of. the strong attempts of the black forwards to break thtough, ,|.he : play was coii-; fined within' the North side of the half-way line. C. Groube scored a clever try right under the goal posts, Desmond converting without difficulty. Desmond scored another try, which was not converted, bringing the total up to 19 joints to North's 3. When the Hacks, did get way on the hard lacking of the opposing backs immeditely sent them Scurrying back to defend their line. Ihe game was, on the whole, very rough, and the work wm mostly done by the forward®. Several men were injured during the courso. of the game, necessitating short stop'-. Osman,, who played a sterling game as half back, was injured on three or four ocasions. Mr Frank Crosbie wa,s referee. •
