DEFEATS HAWKE'S BAY. By Tdearsvh —Press Association. NAPIER, Last Night. Tho New Zealand Maori team inaugurated their tour here on Saturday with a match against Hawko's Bay, and won after a hard-fought game bv three to nil. Drizzling rain set in tho previous' night and continued all day. Tho ground was covered with pools of water, and ouickly been 1110 p sea of mud, on which it was impossible to obtain a sure footing. Tho game was characterised bv a reries of rushes on the part of the Maoris, whf- showed better and wen< much more clever at picking up and passing than the local men. Bav played a good defensive game, and otilv by sheer determination prevented the Maoris from scoring on several occasions. About five minutes before the call of time Moana got over the line, but Erekanena's attempt to convert was fruitless.
