SLY-GROG DENS.
The assertion made by a correspondent in the Carterton paper that Ma®- ■" torton is reeking with isly-grog dens is a base and unwarranted libel upon this community. The police and public are aware that a. certain amount of sly-grogging is indulged in. This is largely a result of the facilities offered for obtaining liquor in. adjoining districts. To .say that the town is reeking with sly-grog clena is, however, to wickedly distort the truth. The police emphatically assert that there are fewer sly-grog shops in Mast6rton to-day 'than there have been -since No-license was carried, and cases of local drunkenness . ore ..rat!®'.- indeed. . Thet only crimes-to speak of during recent months liave •been inconsequential breaches of the Borough -by-laws. •
