CARTERTON.
A Maori newspaper is being printed in Carterton. It is to be a montldy publication. The successful pupils of Mr Purcell Webb, at the recent Masterton competitions, are to give an entertainment at Carterton, on Friday week. Butter is 'at present fetching Is 2d per lb in Carterton. It is expected that the local Brass Band funds will benefit to the extent of £6 or £7 -as, the result of the social held at Dalefield on Tuesday evening. At ft meeting of business people of Carterton on Tuesday evening, the census taken of Masterton tradesmen; on the subject of )No-license was received, and after considering same the following resolutions were car-i ried:— (1) This meeting desires to thank the Masterton tradespeople for replies to our questions ; is satisfied that- No-license has improved business and the moral tone of the town, and commends their verdict to the serious consideration of our own people. (2.) That the replies fron 1 Masterton be printed and forwarded to all business men throughout the South Wairarapa electorate. t The annual re-union under the auspices of the Belvedere Dairy Company was beld in the .schoolroom there on Wednesday evening, when there was a large attendance, and * very enjoyable time resulted. Mr T. Fawcett provided excellent music, and an extra was played by Mr Hogan. Messrs J. Johnson Hogan contributed songs during the' evening, and Miss Jessie Scott a recitation. Ma- W. Earl was M.C. At a meeting of the Oddfellows' Lodge on Wednesday evening, several members were reported on the sick fund. It was announced that the next annual distract meeting would be held at the Lower Hutt. A rough estimate of ' the receipts and expenditure in connection with, the recent, ball was suhinitted, and was considered very satisfactory. An interestingVpamphlet from the Government Actuary, Mr Traversi, on Friendly Society finance, was read by the secretary. -A mild shock of earthquake was felt in Carterton at twenty-five minutes to ten on Wednesday night.
1::, the -recent card tournament, the Oddfellows defeated the Foresters by 23 games to 21.
