THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.
The Masterton Public Library is a very useful institution, that is not appreciated at anything like its worth by the inhabitants of the town. Imagine there -being only three hundred subscribers in a district which boasts a population of seven thousand within- a radius '.f two miles of the Post Office! The position is most unsatisfactory. So <far as the selection of books is concerned, this appears to ibe giving satisfaction; to the limited number of people who patronise tlie institution. What is really required is the encouragement of higher literary tastes among the inhabitants. The people should show that they appreciate the Library. The rest would come as a matter of course. The selecting of hooks might wel 1 be left to the Librarian, with the assistance of a suggestion book and a small purchasing committee of ih, Borough Council.
