MASTERTON PUBLIC LIBRARY.

DISCUSSED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL.

In compliance with a request from Cr Donald, His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradirie) reported at last night's meeting of the Committee of the Masterton Borough Council -that he had made full inquiries with regard to the method of selecting books for the Public Library. He said that some years ago a committee of the Council with an outside committee selected the books., but this method was found unsatisfactory. 'Since then the local booksellers supplied the Librarian with lists of new books periodically, and she, herself, selected the books. The only other way to deal with the matter would ibe for a committee of the Council to take the (matter in hand and read every book that went.into the library. The Mayor added that he thought the present system would be hard to improve, and he had no suggestion to make concerning the matter. After full enquiry he was. very well pleased with the work- of the librarian. Cr Donald held that one or more Councillors ought to be appointed to assist the Librarian in her work. He moved that a committee consisting of Cr Temple and the. mover be appointed rto confer with the Librarian in the matter of buying books for the library. Or O'Leary seconded the motion. Cr Temple said he was "quite prepared to act on the committee if it was the wish of the Council, but he felt certain that trouble would arise. -Th& committee might think a .certain book was fit for circulation while the Librarian might think the opposite. •

Cr Hoax said he would be very pleased if the committee could act successfully. It would also lighten, the work of the librarian. He added that he would, like' the committee to look into the card system used in the library. Or DomaH'6 motion was carried unanimously. The Town Clerk was instructed to have tickets ."No Talking Allowed" and "NoDogs Allowed" placed in the public reading room.
