THE PROPOSED STOCK BRIDGE.

IN COLUMBA ROAD.

A CONFERENCE SUGGESTED.

A letter was read, at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough 'Council from the Clerk of the County Council, requesting a to a letter requesting the- Borough Council to pay half the cost of erecting a stock bridge over the .Waipoua T river at the end of Columiba Road. The Mayor said he did not think - the Council was justified in finding half the cost of the proposed bridge. Cr Elliott was of opinion that a conference between the two bodies affected should be held to consider the matter. .., W Cr Ewington- moved that the County .Council; be advised -that the. Borough- Council is,of opinion that half. the cost ofthe bridge was an excessive a/mount, but that it agrees to contribute part of the cost, and suggests the holding of a conference of the bodies affected to thoroughly deal' with the matter. Cr Hoar said he thought the Council ought to go more deeply into the matter before any such step as Or Ewington suggested was taken. The motion bound the Council to pay something towards the 'bridge, and the matter ought, to., .be fully studied T>efore any decision was- arrived at. Cr "O'Leary did not think a conference would do any good. He said that if the County Council wished to *V erect a 'bridge it would do so, and call upon the Borough Council to form about a mile of road leading from it. Cr O'Leary added that the expense of forming.a-road would be quite sufficient without contributing -towards the cost of the erection of a stock bridge.. Or Prentice seconded Cr Ewington's motion.., ■■-..'■•. . . - , Or Hoar moved as an amendment - that the.inia.tter be .further consider-. «d Iby the Council. The amendment was not seconded, and ithe motion, on being put, was carried.
