WINTER HURDLES WO* BY THE ROVER.

WELLINGTON, Last Night

The Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting opened in glorious weather yestreday. The course was> -ny soft, and the attendance fair. Hector Gray rode two winners, and if now tie with " Whittaker for first place for the season. The totalisator investments' were £16,696, againr.t £11,052 for the corresponding day last year. The racing throughout the day was good, the jumping especially being very fine. Results: — Stewards' Handicap, of 110 sovs., 7 furlongs.— Negative 9.0, 1; Dogger Bank 9.8, 2; Wauchope 10.8, 3. Also started— St. Bill, Merry Frank, Silkweb, Afterthought, Royal Marine, Lerini, Splash, Clean. Dogger Bank led into the -straight, but was overtaken by Negative in- front of the stand. Won by a length. Time, 1 min. 38sec.

Miramar Handicap, of ±uo sovs., 7 furlongs.— Epsom Lass 9.0, 1; Undecided 10.0, 2; Gold Circle 10.1, 3. Also started— Morecombe, Kopek, Kongomai, Turna, Sandy Paul, Black Reef, Golden. Age, Vite, Kopane, Optimeform. Golden Circle led most of the journey, Epsom Lass supplanting him in the straight, and winning by half a length. Time, Imin. 38 2-5 sec.

Hack and Hunters' -Steeplechase, of 100 sovs., 2 imiles and ia half.— Hoanga 10.10, 1; Levent 9.13, 2; St. Albert 10.0, 3.
