FAIR AND TRUTHFUL.
The Carterton News takes the Age to task for having 'stated ,that the Na/fc-. ive Minister has "done everything in his power for years past to prevent the Native lands being thrown open for settlement on profita'ble terms." The News thinks this statement is "grossly incorrect and unfair." Then let us see. .How many acres of Native lands have, been thrown open for selection by ballot during the last five years? How many acres have been offered on profitable terms ? The Official Year Book,of 1910, page 713, shows that the expenditure in the acquisition of Native lands for the year ended 31st March, 1910, was £31,891, and that the area acquired was 15,588 acres. Sir James Carroll has opposed every effort that has been made to give ithe Natives control of their own.estates, and 'to give Europeans an opportunity of acquiring them on, satisfactory terms to both parties. He has been the stumblingblock, all through the piece.
