' Mr C. F. Vallence returned to Masterton last evening from a visit to- the Xorth. Mr and Mr.s John Strang, of Gladstone, purpose leaving in a few days' time, on a trip to the Old Country. A Sydney cable, received last night, recorded the death of Mrs Clarke, .wife of the Secretary of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, formerly Mayor of St. Kilda, Dunedin, and Town Clerk of South Dunedin. The Mayor of Picton, Dr. W. E. Redman, is laid aside with the measles. The genial doctor, who. is, 6ft. 4in in height, and proportionately built, has been practising for 28 years, and this is the first time he has been forced to retire —but the measley microbe is no respecter of persons. Mr Thomas Baillie, £on of the late Mr James Baillie, Greytown, arrived in Wellington last night, by the Mantuka, from Melbourne. \Twenty years ago young Baillie left the Wairarapa for engineering experience at Home, and, although he has circled the globe in the engineering rooms of big liners many times, this is the first opportunity he has had of visiting the land of-his birth. Mr Baillie has for many years been chief engineer in the Strathshire lino of steamers, and he has recently brought one as far <as Melbourne. His, wife and family are living in Dunoon, Scotland, and his mother (an old Greytown resident) is now in Wellington. The late Nireaha Tamaki, of Hamua. was born at Paukawa, Palmerston North, in 1836'. His 'father's name was Mathu Tamaki, and his mother's maiden name was Maria Tehungatai. In his early life, Nireaha residel successfully at Palmerston, Ta~ horaite, Masterton, Ngawapurua and Hamua. On the occasion of the King's visit to Rotorua, when he was Duke of York, Nireaha. took up a party of warriors; and personally led the hakas and war dances on that memorable occasion. At the time of his death, he owned about 5000 acres of freehold land. He had rendered a lot of valuable services to the settlers in the Hamua and Hukanui districts. Major (temporary Lieutenant-Col-onel) G. N. Johnston, of the Royal Garrison Artillery, who has been appointed Director of Ordnance on the New Zealand General Staff, vice Lieu-tenant-Colonel H. F. Hend (returned to England) arrived at Wellington on Tuesday by the Tongariro. LanceSergeant Parkes (Grenadier Guards) and Sergeant-Major Woodhead (West Yorkshire Regiment), who hate been appointed staff instructors in the New Zealand Defence Forces, also arrived by the same vessel.
