THE BUTTER FAMINE. I WANGANW, Last Night. Butter is being retailed (as predicted a few weeks ago) at Is- 6d per I lb, and even at that price supplies. are short. Inquiries have been made I all over the Dominion, but only a limited quantity is procurable. A few thousand boxes are in the freezer at Auckland, but th» quantity ds evenly distributed amongst the merchants. It is expected that the present shortage of supplies will last for the next live or six weeks, till the cows begin to come in. THE STRANDED BARQUENTINE. WANGANUI, Last Night. The finding of the nautical enquiry into the recent stranding of the barquentine Pelotas, at the mouth of the Wanganui river, on June 12th, was delivered this morning. The Court found that the accident was due to an unexpected fresh in the river, of which no warning had been sent to the pilot, and to the insufficient power, under those eiroum- j stances, of the lighter which was j towing the Pelotas. The certificates of- all the officers were returned. No order was made as to costs. No blame was attached to the pilot or Harbour Board, but it was recommended that in future advice re floods up the river be .sent to the pilot.

Aii endeavour is being made in I various 'surrounding counties to ob- ■ ta.in a guarantee from various specified districts, towards the cost of acquiring the Foxton wharves from the Government for the Foxton Harbour Board. The Levin Borough Council discussed the matter last night, on a proposal to guarantee £25 per annum on account of the necessary expenditure of £27,000, but resolved to defer voting until further information is available. A pubic meeting of ctizens in h&vin last week alarmed the desirableness of erecting public baths in Levin, at a. cost of £SOO, contingent on a Government subsidy of £'2so being available. Last night the Borough Council again considered the proposal, and again throw it out by a majority of fix to four. An amendment to raise .Levin's share of ■"the expenditure by public subscription was also rejected by the Council. FLOURISHING A REVOLVER. AUCKLAND,. Last Night, At the Police Court, a seafaring man named William West was charged with presenting a revolver at David Gallagher in Queen Street. Gallagher stated that ho saw flic accused presenting a revolver .it another man, and interfered, when ho was knocked down and kicked. For the defence, it was stated that Wert kid been attacked by a r. timber of men, and drew a n\ oh cr to defend himself. . He mistook Gallagher for one.of his arsnitants. Ke war: warned, and fined -10s and costs.

Last Night. • Dr MeArihur, S.M., gave judgment to-day in a case in which the Wellington Timber Merchants Industrial Union of Employers proceeded against the Pronsc Lumber (Jo., Ltd. to recover £53 for moneys alleged to be due for timber levies and fines, in accordance with the rules of the Union. The Magistrate held that the agreement entered into was one that was dn restraint of trade, and therefore illegal. Judgment was given for the defendants, witth costs. TATTERS ALL'S SWEEPS. OHRISTCHCRGH, Last Night. An interesting case was before the Magistrate's Court this morning, when James Sinipson was charged with a breach of the Gaming Act in buying tickets in a prohibited lot} tery. Smpson and a friend lhad sent money for tickets 'in Tattersall's sweep, and won a second prize of £180(X llien a 'dispute al-ose ever the division of the money. That was how tShe police •came to be interested. The Magistrate suggested that a good many people in New Zealand might 'be prosecuted on similar charges, pea-haps including some of the police. The Chief Detective agreed, but said tihe difficulty was to get satisfactory evidence. Simpson was fined 40s and cost*, the Magistrate expressing tihe hope that lie -would take good care of the money which was got iso illegitimately.
