Miss Wilson has been appointed assistant Teacher at the Hukanui school, in place of Mis 3 Simmons, resigned. The Hon. T. Mackenzie returned to Wellington 1 from Hawke's Bay, and the Hon. G. Fowlds from Taranaki on Saturday. Mr Peter Hampson, an old resident of the Rangitikei district, who was previously a soldier in the 57th Regiment, died at the Wanganui Hospital last week, aged 77 years. Miss Hay ward, matron of the Masterton Hospital, who has been confined to her bed for several days with a slight illness, is making good progress towards recovery. The friends .of Councillor Alex. Donald will be pleased to hear that he is making satisfactory progress in tho Masterton Hospital. The death occurred in Palmerston North on Saturday morning of Mrs E. W. Collins. The deceasied was a sister!of Mr Thomas Mer.icd, of Pahiatua. Mr W? Jewell,, who is being succeeded as chief reporter on the staff of the Manawatu Standard by Mr C. A. Poutean, of Masterton, intends entering farming pursuits. Mr Jewell has been a member of the Standard staff for the last nineteen years. An old resident of Poverty Bay recently passed away in the person of Mrs Andrew, at the age of 87 years, She and her husband came out to New Zealand about 55 years ago, her husband being employed in the copper mines at the Big Barrier Island, near Auckland. Later they had to leave Drury on occounh of the outbreak of Maori, hostilities, and were for some timo in the Thames goldfield. Mr and Mrs Andrew spent their remaining years at Gisborne. A well-known old citizen of Auckland passed away on Saturday in the person of Mr Fitzgibbon Louch, in his 35th year. He came to New /'ealaml in 1875 with the Vesey Stewart settlers, and after the collapse of that enterprise he went to reside in Auckland. His eldest son is Mr John Louch, district engineer of the Public Works Department, Wellington. A well-known former • resident t>»" Paliiatu.i recently passed away at Greymouth in the person of Mr J. Mcßain, formerly in business as a watchmaker in Pahiatua. He took a prominent part in friendly society and musical matters, and was one of the original guarantors of the first Pahiatua fire engine, now owned by the Raetihi brigade.
