DEATH FROM SCALDING. CHRISTOHUROH, Last Night. The ten months old remale child of Mr J. M. Heath died last night from the results of scalding yesterday morning. Whilst the child was sitting in front of a fire it fell off a chair, and in doing so touched the handle of a pot of boiling water, some of which was spilled on the infant. Mrs Heath, who is stated to be a certificated nurse from a London) hospital, attended to the little sufferer, bu* its condition becoming worse, medical aid was called in. Between 9 and 10 o'clock last night all efforts to relieve the child were unsuccessful, and it succumbed. At the inquest the Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death from scalding. The evidence showed that owing to a pin becoming loose in front of the chair, the .child fell out.

STREET SPEAKING. OHRIBTCHURdH, Last Alfred Thurkettle, of the Salvation Army, on two charges of breaches of the City Council by-laws, prohibiting public speaking or praying v in Cathedral Square, was fined 7s and 20s costs in each case. F. R. Cooke, on a similar .breach, was fined 10s and costs. Regarding a previous breach by Cooke, who is a Socialist orator; the fine not having been paid, he was arrested to-day and imprisoned.

FIRE AT PAPANUI. OHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. By a fire at 5 a.m. to-day, a tenroomed dwelling at Papanui, owned and occupied by Mrs Eliza Smith, was totally destroyed, the inmates escaping in their night attire. The house was insured for £2OO in the Commercial Union office, and the furniture for £125 in the New Zealand office. .
