Only three feet of brick wall saved the adjoining premises of Messrs William Brookes and Company, a large stationery warehouse and printing establishment. ' The lines of hose were carried j through and over other tall buildings I near by, but by that- time the building was well alight, and the firemen were able to do but little. Huge quantities of burning paper were carried half a mile away, and caused considerable anxiety until it started raining. Crowds watched the progress of the fire throughout the night. The stock of machinery was insured in various offices for £35,000. The damage is estimated at £50,000. |
