MR E. C. JELLICOE.
Whatever opinion oue may entertain concerning the treatment otf. - the Maori youth Kaka, wihb is now''no more, one cannot but 'express -regret at the undignified communication ■sent by Mr E. G. Jelliicoe to His -Excellency the Governor. Lord Islington would appear to have acted conscientiously throughout ~ the whole unhappy proceedings, and it is unfair to suggest that- either he or the
Executive Council were influenced by Mr Jelliooe's appeal to the Throne, in determining the. day or hour upon which Kaka should die. The Executive probably knew that the Royal prerogative oould only be exercised by the approval of his Advisers in the Dominion, and it acted very rightly in getting the sorry business over with a.s much expedition as possible. If His Excellency consults the washes of a large section of the community lie will refuse to convey Mir Jellicoe'® ill-advised message to the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
