It may not be generally known that Sir Joseph Ward is the first New Zealandeo" to he created a Baronet. The only other person in Australasia to receive the distinction was Sir Rupert Clarke, of Victoria.. The honour conferred upon Sir Joseph Waird has been received .with mixed feelings by this community. Most of .the "Liberal" newspapers of tlie Dominion express regret that Sir Joseph should have taken the lead in the matter of establishing in New Zealand a hereditary aristocracy.
