DEATH IN A POLICE CELL.
PRISONER SAYS HE TOOK POiSON. Charles Brown, a labouring man, about fifty years of age, who was living apart from liia wile, and who was arrested on Sunday moiming for allegedly creating a disturbance in front of No. 7, Howard Street (wShere his wife resided), died ait the Liaomibton Quay police station in Wellington. about 7 p.m. thie. same day. Tih© man, when, arrested, was oharg- ( ed by Constable Brown with being drunik while in oharge. of firearms, and with using had language. '■ After he had been lodged in his cell he remained quietr and about 9.30 a.m. told Sergeant Diatfby that he had taken poison.. Dr Heiu-y wa<s> summoned, administered emetics, and . left the prisoner apparently all right. He was visited frequently at intervals during the afternoon. At 6 p-m. he seemed to be lying sleeping on. his couch, hut at 7.15 p.m. it was discovered that the man was dead.
