NO-LICENSE IN ASHBURTON.
AN OFFICIAL INVESTIGATION. Messrs G. B. Nieholls, of Dunedin, and C. J. F. King, of Invercargill, vioited Aishburton iast week for the purpose of ascertaining the present position of the •No-license reform in that township. In a letter to the local Press 'they affirm;, (1) that the shouting system as on 'license dis-, 'tracts, and which i» acknowledged to ■ the worst feature of the drinking customs of tlie day, is destroyed; (2) that casual drinking has heeai greatly reduced; (3) that the regular importation of drink in ia legal manner is confined to a comparatively small proportion of tlie population; ,(4) that compared to license times the amount of drink consumed is very greatly reduced ; (5) that the progress of the town and district has continued unabated isinoe -No-license, many of the ibusine&s men affirming that nolicense has helped to onake business more and satisfactory; (6) thatpublic order Ah- the streets is wellnigh perfect, leaving little to be diesired ; (7) ifliat crime has Seen greatly reduced, and that of the drunkards charged nearly all are arrested either at tlie station or coming from the station, and thus are the result- of license elsewhere, not of no-license in Ashhurtotn ; (8) that the town is both, clean in its physical and moral aspect and that in very many points the citizens of Ashbairton are to be envied the environment in which they spend their Hive*.' If any person is prepared to disprove (denial is not sufficient) any of these affirmations, let him | speak now, or forever hold his peace.
