AMUSEMENTS.
THE ROYAL HAWAIIANS. The Haivaiian Native Concert-Par-ty of singers, musicians, and dancers, which are opening at .Masterton to-morrow (Saturday) evening, preseeivt a unique entertainment, an which mandolines, guitars and Hawaiian native instruments, combined with Hawaiian /music and Hula I>anoes, will bespecially ifaatured. The National Hawaiian music is very inspiring and attractive, and has become an element in America, and is gradually forcing itself into European musical circles by its daintiness and chamm. This company was organised by the Hawaiian Progress Association to tour the world, and they have created a sensation wherever they have appeared. Included in tlie organisation is the Hawaiian Glee Party, a body of eight male singers
and musicians, whose part singing of English and Hawaiian isongs have won for them the reputation of being the finest harmoniisers that ever toured the United States. In Australia recently, this Barty never received less than six encores for any item they contributed. Mr Ernest Kaal, the leader, is the founder of the Hawaiian School of Music wMch now exists in Honolulu. He is recognised as the leading master of all that is good and beautiful in art and music in the Hawaiian Islands. J Associated with Mr Kaal is Mr Thomas Carter, Mr J. Kamikani, and Mr Robert KJaawa, singers who have won renown throughout Europe, who are 'bound to become prime .favourites- here hy reason of their artistry and their beautiful voices. There are three ladies in the combination, who .sing solos and duets in an incomparable manner, two of i them appearing in the Hula, which j is the national dance of Hawaii. The I company appear on the stage dressed in white silk, with purple sashes and yellow wreaths round their necks, which is the sign of royal favour, and commence their entertainment with that beautiful well-known cliorns of welcome, "Aloha Oe," and from that on Hawaiian and English songs follow in quick succession. Included amongst the 'English selections, are part songs in new settingis of "Annie Laurie," "My Rosary," "Thora," also several new English and American ballads. The whole performance is redolent of the sunny isles of the Pacific, and it is said the memory of it lingers ill the mind when moisfthings are forgotten. The prices have been fixed at 3s, 2s and Is, and the box plan is at Miss Rive's.
LUCKY DURHAM. TO-NIGHT. This evening, at the Mosterton Town Hall, Mr William Anderson wall present H. R. Roberts and Beatrice Day, together with a specially selected company, in Wilson Barrett's great play "Lucky Durham." It is a play built with all Wilson Barrett''; skill and trained knowledge of stagecraft, with a judicious blending of the grave and gay, and a pretty and wholesome love story as the central notice. Speaking of the two principal characters, as pourtrayed by H. R. Roberts, and Beatrice Day) the Melbourne Argus said:: —"Miss Beatrice Day, in the exacting role of Lady Mountfallon, gives a- brilliant niece of acting. Her handling of the very difficult hysterical incident is one of the best things wlhdoh has been done on our stage for a very long time. Mr Roberts as John Durham, as was only to be expected of this clever actor, gave a forceful interpretation of the title role." The box plan for to-night is open .at Miss Rive's, bookseller.
