GLADSTONE HOTEL
An application for the issue of a new license for the Gladstone Hotel to William Young, was opposed by the police. Mr A. L. Herdman, who appeared for the applicant, stated that arrangements had ibeen made for the sale of the lease to a Mr Butler, who was well-known an. the district, and who had held a license at Martinlborough. As the objections of the police were chiefly of a .personal character he asked that the application be held over trill next meeting, to permit of the contract for sale being completed. Inspector Ellison, who appeared for the .police, stated thait there were four (Statutory objections to the granting of .the license. The house had not been; conducted for some yeans as it should have been. It would require an expenditure of at least £l5O to put it in decent repair. The .sanitary arrangements were not what they' should be. He wtould not object to the granting off a license, provided that a satisfactory licensee was obtained, and the license wais only granted for siree months, so that there would ibe a guarantee of the repairs being carried out. Ma* Herdmaai suggested that the Bench .should grant the license on condition that an undertaking is given that the repairs are carried out. The chairman stated that the Bench had decided to adjourn the case for three weeks, to enable the arrangements for a transfer to be completed, and the police to make enquiries as to the character of the proposed licensee; also to enable a guarantee" to be giveni that the repairs would be affected- andi the house properly conducted. If the Bench was 'satisfied, at the end of three weeks, the permanent license would be granted. An application for costs of witnesses 'who had been summoned to give evidence as to the condition of ■L' o hotel was deferred: until the adjourned sitting.
