Mr A. L. Herdman, M.P., was a •visitor to Carterton yesterday.
Inspector Ellison, of Wellington, represented the police in certain licensing cases heard in Carterton yesterday.
The death is announced by cable from London of Mr Henry Hayman, who has large business interests in New Zealand, beiny x a partner in the firm of P. Hayman and Co.
A Paris cable announces the death of M. Rouvin, ex-Premier of France.
The remaius of the late Mr William Blinkhorne were interred in the Masterton cemetery yesterday afternoon. The Druids and Foresters' Lodges were represented, and there was a large following of residents. An impressive service was performed at the grave.
The resignation of the Hon. T. K. McDonald as a member of the Legislative Council has been received by the Government.
Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P., Mayor of Wellington, underwent an operation yesterday for appendicitis. He is reported to be progressing favourably.
One of the old identities of the Geraldine district, Canterbury, MiThomas Buckley, died on Tuesday, aged 80 years. He worked on the Victorian'goldfields, and come over to Gabriel's Gully. For some years the late Mr Buckley carried on farming at Pleasant Valley.
It is considered probable that Mr A. McFarlane will be selected as the Opposition candidate for. the Pahiatua seat at the general election. His Excellency the Governor left Auckland for Wellington last evening.
Mr Evan Parry, the newly-appoint-ed electrical engineer to the New Zealand Government, is a passenger on the Corihthic, due in Wellington on July 10th. Mr W. C. Dudley, of Opunake, Chairman of the Egmont County Council, has decided to contest the Egmont seat at the general election (says the Taranaki News.)'
It is understood that Mr John Mc-, Lachlan has definitely decided to contest the Ashburton seat again in the Government interests at the next general election.
The Freedom of the City of Bristol has been conferred on Mr Andrew Fisher, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth.
Mr Stevens, until recently connected with the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at Eketahuna, has been transferred to the Foxton branch. Mr Arthur Way was re-elected secretary of the Marton Jockey Club at the annual meeting held on Tuesday night. During the meeting several eulogistic references were made to Mr May's work as secretary, and he was warmly complimented upon the highly successful results of the year.
