STRANGE ARGUMENT.
The subsidised Press of New Zealand ha.s a style of argument peculiarly its own. The N.Z. Times, for instance, finds in ' the statement of Mr F. M. B. Fisher that he would repair the Valuation Department, a deep-laid scheme on tilie part of the Opposition to abolish the laaid tax. Needless to say, no such foolish thought ever entered the mind of Mr. Fisher, or any other member of the Opposition Party. The Valuation Department has . been in urgent need of reform for years past. It- ' has been a cumlbersome".institution, without any logical or systematic basis upon which to make its assessments. The country could well afford to remove such a Department from Ministerial control, and to place the responsibility for the greater portion of 'the valuations upon the shoulders of local bodies.
