A COMMON GAUSE.

THE GREATEST PROBLEM

(Received Last Night, 10.5 o'clock.)

LONDON, May 31

1 Lord Haldane, addressing the London University Officers' Training Corps, said that the conference of Home and Dominion Ministers with the army and navy experts was a source of profound .satisfaction. "We opened our minds 'to each other," he said. "We have taken each other into confidence, and found that we have common objects and a common mind. We shall now come to a common conclusion on problems wliich, until recently, were obscure and difficult. I believe that the past week wall turn out to be a memoraible one in. the history of the Empire." Proceeding, Lord Haldane said that one of the gz*eat problems this generation had to solve was how to come to the aid of the more distant parts of the Empire should they be in peril. It would be a tremendous burden to impose upon these Islands to sendi expeditionary forces; but the problem might be solved if the rest of the nation was ready to take up tlie burden.
