CUP COMPETITIONS
Quite a large number of spectators witnessed the hockey matches at Lansdowne yesterday after noon. The grounds were in splendid playing order, and the weather was fine. Following are the results: — SENIOR. P. AND T. v. CARTERTON. The best match played this season was. the one between P. and T. and Carterton. A strenuous fight resulted in a draw, neither side scoring. The P. and T. commenced attacking right from the opening. They were in the circle in a few .minutes, but Diggins missed his shoot. At this stage Ellis was injured, and had to leave the field, and the Carterton team was weakened considerably in consequence. Tho P. and, T. did not give their opponents a ! chance to attack, but the hatter's defence was like a stonewall. Morgan, in goal, was too isafe for the P. and T. Several chances were missed by the forwards in the excitement, being unable to get the ball in a position to .shoot, and one was missed by a bad shoot. Two goals looked almost certain, but they did not come off. The hack section of the P. and T. team was rather weaker than usual, but this was made up for by the forwards, although the captain, Loader, did not play up to liis usual form. Carterton were just the opposite. The forwards were very weak in the attack, while the backs excelled themselves. Mr F. Rosson gave the utmost .satisfaction as referee. EXCELSIOR v. MASTERTON. Excelsior were in great form, beating Masterton toy 7 goals to nil. The former had the match all their own Way from start to finish. The Masterton team possesses some good players, but they also have eome very weak .men. On the other hand there are very few weak points in the Excelsior pack. The goals were scored by Ashley (2), A. Williams (3), Pragnell and Picton. Mr Fisher was referee.
