MAURICEVILLE WES7.

The Mauriceville Rifle Club held the closing shoot of the season on Wednesday, May 24th. The Club also competed in the Daily Mail Competitions. The day was, without a doubt, the worst experienced on the range this season—a very tricky nor-wester, varying from a rear to 10 degrees right. "The following were the scores, the first eight counting for the Daily Mail contest: —

TE WHARAU. The heavy rains last week caused several heavy slips on the roads in this district, and travellers generally had some exciting experiences. Mr F. Richards, mail contractor, had a rather nasty experience, having one of his horses swept away in the Kaiawhata River, and only with the greatest difficulty did he succeed in getting his mail brake across. Thehorse was discovered next morning, fortunately riot mush worse for its ducking. Rabbit carcases are now despatched from Te Wharau per crates twice a week, and their condition on arrival in Wellington is favourably commented upon. Rabbit-trapping is likely to open up a new industry in this district. Mr H. Dunn, a well-known Victoria musician, is at present residing in Te Wharau. and his musical renderings are much appreciated by the boarders at Cotter's. There is a movement afoot here at present to have the name of Tie ■Wharau'.changed' to Cotter Town, as practically the whole of the township is under, the management of that enterprising citizen. Mr Warding, Road: Inspector, is at present on a tour of inspection in this district, accompanied by Mr Opie, County Engineer: Mr Lees held his second class in wool-classing on Tuesday in Messrs Vennells' woolshed, when a large number of farmers were present, and some very -good work —was gone through. Farmers are showing a good deal of enthusiasm in this useful branch of technical instruction. Mr Clark, of Cork, Ireland, is at present residing with Mr R. Barrer, of Lowlands. CARTERTON. At a meeting or citizens of Carterton on Wednesday evening, it was de-r cided to arrange a demonstration for Coronation Day. A strong committee was set up to further the object, and it was also decided to raire funds to provide a band rotunda for Carrington Park.

Messrs A. E. Booth (Chairman), H. R. Burgess. E. J. Matson, T. Pike, T. H. Henderson, F. White, and C. Sninn have been elected a school, committee at Parkvale for the ensuing year.

At a meeting: of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Oddfellows on Wednesday evening, it was decided not to enter a team in the Friendly Societies seyen-aside football tournament. The date of the annual ball was for July 13th, and a strong committee was set up to arrange details. The first meeting of the recently formed Dramatic Club at Belvedere, wn.3 held on Wednesday evening, Mr B. Stout presiding. \A play was chosen, and the respective parts allotted the performers, who will hold their first practice on Monday evening.
