THE TRUST ELECTION.
The Trust Lands Trust election in Masterton yesterday was most unsatisfactory. Of 3415 electors on the roll, only 675 took the- trouble to go to the poll. Strangely enough, the defeated candidate secured 338 votes, or one mar© than half tho
I total. It is difficult, therefore, to arrive at an accurate opinion as to the significance of the poll. When more than half of the electors voted for Mr Robinson, it can hardly be said that his views do not meet with the approbation of the public. What has really happened is that the voters, recognising that tliere was really no policy at stake, have returned those candidates whom they thought best fitted to deal with the problems of the future. It is very much to be deploa-ed that greater interest is not manifested in public affairs in Masterton, and, as Mr Pragnell well stated at the declaration of the poll, there is very 'little encouragement offered to people who are aaixious to quicken enthusiasm in local government.
