THE FOBMAL OPENING

United Press Association — By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 24, 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, May 23. The Imperial Conference sat for two and a-haif hours. Mr Asquith, in a half-hour's speech, made sympathetic references to the death of Edward VII. Mr Bannerman emphasised the nonparty character of the Conference. The five Premiers replied. The Conference has decided to sit on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 11 o'clock to 1.30, and in the afternoon if urgent. Sir Joseph Ward withdrew his resolution in favour of the admission of the Press, which other delegates considered would result in speaking being hampered. An official summary will be issued daily. Sir Joseph Ward has moved his Imperial Council resolution, and has not finished his speech.

WELCOME TO DELEGATES. (Reqoived May 24, 8.10 a.m.) LONDON, May 23. Tho Hon. H. H. Asquith (Primo Minister), at the Foreign Office, heartily welcomed the delegates to the Imperial Conference. He briefly defined the scope of the Conference. The Hon. L. Harcourt (Secretary of State for the Colonies), the Hon. S. Buxton (-Postmaster-General) and several other Ministers were present.
