The congregation of Knox Churcl, are entertaining Miss M. McGregor, to-n-orrow evening, prior to her leaving on a holiday trip to the Old Country. Miss McGregor is a very prominent worker and leader of the Young Ladies' Bible Class. Staff-Captain Newbold, of the SalTat jon Army, who, imany, years ago, "was'' stationed in Masterton, will pay a visit to the local corps on Saturday next. ■ ' > ■ Captain F. D. Seaborne, of the Tyser line, died in Wellington yesterday at the age of fifty-two years* ' Mr Alfred Cox, who represented I Heathcote in Parliament from 1863 to ! 1865 and Timaru from 1866 to 1868, died on Tuesday, aged eighty-six I (states a Christchufch Press Association telegram.) He had land in South' j Canterbury and Waikato until twentyI five year ago, when he retired.
Mr James Orr, formerly manager of the Rangitira sheep station for the Glasgow Bank Assets Company, died in Gisborne last week. He had been a resident of the district since 1878.
Sir Joseph Ward is expected to return to New Zealand at the beginning of August.
Private advice has been received to the effect that Mr Richard Dorset, son of Mrs W. L. Dorset, of Mauriceville, and a brother of Mrs W. J. Jackson, of Masterton, has passed his second last examination for the degree of doctor at the Edinburgh University. A London cable states that Lord Crewe will resume his duties in the course of a few days. Mr James Allen, M.P,. will leave for a visit to the South Sea Islands at the end of next week.
The death is reported of a very old resident of Nelson orovinoe, Mrs W. Holdaway. in her 81st year. She had been a resident of Nelson province continuously since 1841 —a period of seventy years.
