THE MAYOR'S HONORARIUM.

INCREASED BY £SO. Tlie question of the Mayor's honorarium cropped up at the meeting of the Mastertom Borough Council during the discussion of the' estimates last liigiht. Cr Temple moved iJiat the honorarium be increased from £SO to £IOO for Coronation year. Or Hoar opposed the proposal. He recognised the good work which was being done by the Mayor, but he dad not think the time was ripe for an increase. Cr Braguell seconded the resolution of Cr Temple. He thought that £IOO a year was little enough to vote the Mayor. Or Ew&ngton supported the proposed increase, and Cr "Elliott heartily approved it, stating that the town should be proud of the work of the Mayor, and willing to pay him a decent honorarium. The Mayor l stated that, so far as lie was concerned, every penny voted 'him went back to' the ratepayer®. He was perfectly unconcerned in the matter. Cr Prentice said they should not make this a personal matter. They should increase the honorarium as a. matter of principle. Or Hoar stated that lie did not make this a personal matter. He opposed the resolution because he did not wish to see an increase in the rates. The motion of Cr Temple was carried on the voices, Or Hoar alone dissenting.
