MAORIS AND "TANGIS."
The perpetuation of that legacy of the isuperstitionis of piiencivdilised days, the Maori "tanga," is isiliowly but surely (resulting in tiho impoverishing and 'physical undoing of the Native race. It is gratifying to find that the iNiative medical officer, as well as the cihdef officer of the Health Department, is discouraging these senseless gatherings, which are responsible for so much disease among the Natives. In addressing (the Taranaki Hospital sad Chaifttalble Aid Board recently, D.r VaJimitine stated that an aitttemupt should (be made to reduae the duration of "tangis." The Boards had power to enforce iSanitary eonditaonß, and -should exercise this power for the preservation of the aiborigiinal nace.
