MASTERTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING OF

The monthly meeting of the Council j of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, there being present: Messrs Alex. Henderson (in the chair), E. H. Waddington, G W. Sellar, J. B. Keith, W. E. Chamberlain, D. Donald and R. Brown. Apologies for absence were received from Megsrs Caselberg and Chennells. The Treasurer reported a credit balanco at date of £7 6s Id. A letter was read from the Minister @f Railways acknowledging the communication of the Chamber in reference to the new time-table. A further letter was received from the Minister asking for advice in regard to the suggetfted afternoon train north from Masterton. Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Postmaster-General, advising that Miss Williams had been appointed supervisor at the Masterton telephone exchange.—Received. Reports were received from the British Imperial Council of Chambers of Commerce. London, and the eighth congress of Chambers and Overseas Institutions in Amsterdam. —Received. Messrs .T , Osman and Co., Ltd., of London, forwarded correspondence in reference to kiln works. —Received.

QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of members of the Chamber was held at the conclusioH of the meeting of the Council, Messrs R. W, Robson and T. J. Thompson l>eing present in addition to the members already named. In answer to a question by Mr Robson, the Chairman stated that instead of making representations to other Chambers in regard to railway matters* it had been decided to issuet petitions in regard to the Riimvtaka deviation. Mr R. Brown stated that a League had been formed in Masterton with a view to pushing along the Waipukurau line. As the Chamber, however, haxl taken the matter up, the League had stayed its hands. The Secretary said the question of the Waipukurau line "had been abandoned for the present by. the Chamber, in favour of the Rimutaka deviation. Mr Robson expressed the opinion that the Government had in view the , duplicating of the Manawatu line. The matter was ftirther discussed, 1 and the meeting adjourned.
