CARTERTON.

It is understood thai at the next meeting, ©f the Carterton Borough a deputation fro© the local Fire Brigade will attend for the purpose of bringing before that body the desirability of connecting the Brigade Station with the telephone exchange. That is a necessity that needs no comment, for it is desirable that all brigade stations should be connected with all system® .that, afford quick transmission of messages. The local Brigade" Station is probably one of the most up-to-date stations for any town of-its- size in the Dominion, and that it has been in occupation for some years without tho use of the telephone,- wlien such was available, appears strange; and it is to ibe hoped that now the matter is to be brought before the Council, this little but important defect will be remedied.

Mr and Mrs R. McDonald, of Waihakeke, who have been on a short holiday trip to Sydney, returned home on Thursday. Mr L. Carmine, of the local Bank of New Zealand staff, who [has been absent on holiday leave, resumed duty yesterday. _ ,

An additional lamp is being placed in position on the platform of the local railway 'station, to improve the lighting at the northern approach. A protective fence has also been put up on the border ol the platform where there was a dangerous fall. Yesterday was very wintry, and cold rain fell at intervals. In fact, the atmosphere was keen enough for snow.

* A Musical' Niagara, a novel name for an entertainment, was held by the local corps of the Salvation Arimv on Thursday evening, and although the atmospiheire was biiting, and the overhead elements unpleasant, there was a fair attendance, who. thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed, the programme.

A movement is afoot to have some celebration on Coronation Day in Carfcenton. A meeting for the purpose is to be lieM next week, and it is to be hioped that- the attendance will be representative of the community. Usually matters -of this kind are left to a willing few, but for a matter of this nature all 'citizens should be found willing. Whatever form of celebration, is decided upon it is to be hoped that it will b? one that will be impressive of tho importance of the event upon the minds of the Vicing generation.
