CASTLEPOINT COUNTY CLERK.

[To The Editor. 1

Sir, — I was much ''interested in a letter iix your ,paper oi Wedner.:! . , signed by W. Balzieli, re the i£v.—oolmaster acting as clerk for the Castlepoint Comity Council. Mr Dalzieli mentioned, in the course of his remarks, that the Castlepoint County as so small that it is unable to pay more than £IOO in salary to its clerk. How was it, Mr Editor, that when Mr Dalziell filled the position of chairman to> the County Council, a, salary exceeding a, good, hit over £"•00 was paid to its clerk? It appears to me that there is something in this business that the public are not aware of, aind a searching investigation should be made. The CasitJepoint County Council invited applications for the position of Clerk, and fourteen applications were received, and Mr Sutton was cnosen by the mem/hers of the County to aiat as their Clerk at a salary of £IOO ai year. In due time, Mr Sutton wrote to the Wellington Education Board, aisking permission to hold the position, and that body granted Mr Button ipenmisision to hold office. Why was that permission granted, to this schoolmaster ? Was influence brought to bear, or was Mr Buchanan, in moving the motion granting rfeiie necessary position, seeking to become famous in this town ? My contention'is, Sir, that no schoolmaster, no matter who, or wfhat he is, should hold any outside position, for by doing so he is only doing am in justice to the scholars attending the school. I contend, Sir, thiat no schoolmaster, no matter what his qualifications are, is capable of holding two such important positions. If Ms time is taken up with his scholars, as it should be, there would be very little opportunity of ihim carrying out his Council duties in an efficient manner.— lam ,etc.,

JUSTICE, Tirnii, May 11th, 1911.
