The Rev. W. A. Evans, of Wellington, was a visitor to .Masterton yesterday. Mr Evans takes a keen interest in public and philanthropic matters, and was for a time a member of the Wellington Education Board.
Mr G. M. Thomson. M.P., Dunedin North, is on a vin't to Hawera,. and may stay -for several weeks. He is staying with his son. Dr. Thomson. Mr William Malcolm, of Waipawa, has been appointed overseer to the Weber County Council. There were 38 applications for the po-ition.
A Sydney cable states that the, Hon. Mr MacDonell, Chief Secretary for New South Wales, is dangerously ill in a private hosnital in Melbourne, and is suffering from an internal disease.
General Sir Cnarie- an£ Lady Bennet are passengers for New Zealand by the Victoria, which sailed from Sydney yesterday.
- The staff of the Ma-terton Post Office presented Mr, H. L. Price with a silver entre dish, in honour of his recent marriage. Mr S. Inder, postmaster, made the nro?<vntation on behalf of the staff. Mr Moore made a few congratulatory remarks, and the., recipient suitably responded. A Sydney cable, received last night, stated that Mr Grattan Coughlan, a well-known comedian, was found dead in his bed yesterday morning. He had performed in .■>, theatre on the night previous.
Mr C. A. Pownnll. solicitor, of Masterton, is at present on a visit to Napier.
Mr H. 'Hill. Chief Inspector of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, reached Wellington yesterday after making a tour of the world.
At a meeting of the Emuloy°rs' Association in New Plymouth, Mr W. Pry or, secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, announced that he had received another offer, and that he would therefore probably be severing his connection with the Federation.
Mr Andrew Fisher, Prime Minister of Australia, has been offered the Freedom of the city of Glasgow. The death is recorded of an old resident of Midhirst (Taranaki) —M:Wi'liam .Jordan —who was porn in Belfast (Ireland) seventy-nine years ng«-
By the last English mail, Mr E. H. Waddington, of Masterton, received news of the death of his mother at Brighton, England. The deceased had reached tho ripe age of ninety-two. She leaves two sons, one of whom is in the Civil Service in New Sotuh Wales.
Mr Albert Gundersen, Vice-Consul for Norway, and a well-known citizen of Christchurch, died at his residence, Riccarton. on Saturday.

Mr W. B. Matheson hns been elected Chairman, and Mr B. Morriss ViceChairman of the Eketahuna branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. From a conversation with Mr Mark Maxton. of Greytown, we understand that it is his intention to address the electors, as a candidate for the November elections, some time before the end of this month. His first address will be delivered in Greytown. Mr Maxton has been so long in the Wairarapa that he is well-known throughout the district, and informs US he has been promised strong support. Ho lived in Masterton some years ago, and was engaged upon the staff of our local contemporary. From there he wei-t to Wellington with Mr W. F. Boydhon.se. and helped run the "Evening Press" in that city for some time, but for the last eleven years he has on a general commission agency in Greytown.
