DEATH OF A PIONEER.
MR JOHAN J ESSEN. One of the, pioneer settlers of Mauriceville West, in, the person, of Mr Johan Jessen, passed away peacefully at the residence of his eon (Mr William Jessen), at Wellington, yesterday, at the rip© age of 82 years. The late Mr Jessem came to tine Dominion in 1874, in the ship Loch. Awe, and took up bis residence in Mauriceville, which was then all standing bush and roadless. Here he literally carved out a home for himself, like otihers of his sturdy countrymen, who came out with him and settled in the same locality. He lived at Mauriceville until tihe deatih of his wife some eighteen, months ago, when he went to Wellington to reside with 'his son. He leaves one son (Mr William Jessen), who was a BUfflcfeSisful farmer, and founder of the Mauriceville Dairy Company. He also leaves two daughters, one of whom, Mrs Moeller (a widow) resides at Mauracevil'le, and the other Mrs P. C. Christiansen, at Wellington. The remains will be interred in the Lutheran Cemetery at Mauriceville West, to-morrow afternoon.
