MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday afternoon, there being present: Crs. W. J. Welch (Chairman), J. Miller, J. Morris, D. J. Camercn, A. Murray and R. F. Beetham. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. Kebbell and Foreman, and to Cr. Toogood during the period of his visit to the Old Country. The Chairman of the Upper Plain Water Supply Managers asked permission to construct a water-race across the Akum Road.—On the motion of tho Chairman, it was decided that the application be granted, on conditio l " that the.work is done to the satis' tion of -the Engineer, and that ...e culvert i 3 the full width of the road. Mr H. G. Williams advised the Council by letter that the acquisition of water-rights over the Lansdowne dam Was a question which should be submitted to Mr T. C. Williams, who was the owner of the dam. —On the motion of Cr. Morris, it was decided that Mr T. C. Williams be communicated with on the subject. The Ca'stlepoint County Council remitted its phare of the interest on loan No. 117. . t . The Masterton' "Borough Council notified that consideration of the question of contributing towards the erection of the stock bridge over the Waipoua liver had been postponed until the next meeting of the Council. The Masterton Borough Council advised that its proportion of the account rendered for the northern approach contract would be paid as soon as the money was available. Mr Thomas Taylor wrote, referring to the proposal of the Council to close the old road at the Longhill deviation. —The Clerk was, on the motion of Cr. Murray, instructed to take the necessary steps to close the road. Rabbit Inspector Rankin notified Council that the grand reserve at Rangitumau was infected with rabbits. It was decided to authorise the Rabbit Inspector to take the necessary steps to destroy the rabbits. The Prjhlic Works Department wrote, stating that the £52 grant for the Miki Miki road was unconditional. Mr C. F. Gawith intimated the terms upon which he would consent to hand over a piece of land for improving the corner of Upper Plain and Boundary roads.
A petition was read from S. Smith and others, asking tho Council to metal two or three chairs of Pauken's road. . ■ Mr Jf G. Dagg asked the Council to expond the sum of £s;ixi metalling on. Black Creek Road,
It was; decided, on the motion of Cr. Beetham, that the ferry service at the Lower Taueru be placed in order, so that it might be used by travelling stock. The Engineer was authorised, with Cr. Beetham, to appoint a suitable person to collect the fees at the reserve.
'The report,the meeting of the Finance Committee was read. The Treasurer reported a debt on the general aqfeqvuit of £69 9k 2d, and'a credit on 'to local ; bodier. • accourjt of £2758. The receipts for the month amounted to £l4l 17s lOd. Accounts amounting to £1760 0s lOd were recommended for payment. The Committee resolved that the application of M'essn; Smith, Gordon, and Wilton to have three chain?, of Pau- i lien's road formed and metalled be ap-1 proved, and tiro County_Engineer be! instructed to proceed* with the work j at once. The Committee recommended I th© Council to accept the. offer of Mr C. F. Gawith with regard to widening •the, roadway at the corner of the Upper Plain road and the Akura loonline. The Committee also recommended the acceptance of an offer of Mr A. for the contribution of £5 •toward? the cost of forming about six | dhainr. of road and pathway in Carverthen Street, and the ins?ruction of the Engineer to proceed with the work. An offer of Mr J. G. Dagg to repair the Black Creek road was accepted. It was' decided to recommend the Council to acquire the right to use "Fray's check figure system", for the purposo of facilitating the balancing of the Council's books. The Clerk was instructed to ascertain whether the A.M.P. Society would agree to the Council paying back the unexpended portion of the Opaki watarrupply loan, and that, failing such agreement, the amount be lodged on fixed deposit with the Bank of New i Zealand, or paid into the loan sin kin o; j fund at the Public Trust Office, if ! that bo lawful.—The report Was adopj ted. | The Engineer was, on the motion of i the Chairman, instructed to report upon the cost of painting two bridges ! across the Black Creek.
