MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Mastenton Borough Obuneil \v.as held last evening, there being present:—His Worship "the Mayor (Mr J. M. Ooradine), Ors. A. Donald, J. Prentice, W. Pragneil, W. Candy, T. G. Hoar, J. _. Ewington, F. W. Temple, and H. J. G'Lcar y. An apology for absence was received from Or J. , Elliott. • The Manager of the Abattoirs reported that during the month 120 cattle were slaughtered, 11 calves, 740 sheep and lambs,- and 308 pigs. The balance on the last day of April was £73 lis lid.
The Librarian reported that during the month 20 new books had been received, (there were now 5770 books in (the shelves, 1532 books lent, 279 subscribers, amount of cubscriptions received £25. The Librarian also reported that the Wangamii and Diinedin papers hid been written to, asking; tliem to supply papers free of cost, to the Library, owing to numerous enquiries. The Manager of one Wanganui paper offered tJheir journal for 13s a year, and a Dunedin pa.per requested £1 per annum. —lt was decided to secure the Wa.nganui Herald. The Poundkeeper's report wac read as follows :t- Horses impounded, in the Borough 4, out of the Borough 16 j cattle, in the Borough 2, out of the Borough 0; sheep, in the Borough 1, out of the Borough 0. Twenty horses, two head of cattle, and one sheep were released from the pound. A total of £6 6s 3d had been received in fees during the month. . The Town Olerk reported thiat he had found that books after being finished with at the Library were not fit for giving away. He recommended that all old books be burned.
All the foregoing reports were adopted. Mrs Lane wrote expressing her grateful thanks for the kindness of the Council in connection with her recent sad bereavement. Mr W. Morris, an eic-Councillor, wrote tlianfeing the Council for the kind neixnairks made concerning him at the last meeting. A letter was read from Mr H. F. Green, aiocepting the position of accountant. Mr Green took up his duties on Monday last. , The Nelson Town Clerk wrote, stating that his Council had decided to present the Masterton Council with a pair of paradise ducks for the Park.— The gift was accepted with thianks.
An invitation was received from the isecretary of the Church of England Men's Society to attend a special service to be held on Sunday, the 2Sth inst.— The invitation was accepted. The Mayor and Town Clerk were authorised to sign 'lie debentures in connection with the Northern Approach loan. ' Accounts-, amounting to £l2*4 13p 2d were submitted and passed for payment. . * ; The Town Clerk was inf-tnict«d to prepare a re.port concerning the advisability of turning out the horses during the winter, or selling the ones not needed. His Worship- the Mayor reported that the annual estimates would be submitted for the approval and amendment of the Council at the next meeting of the Committee of the Council.- :;.■''
