FATAL FALL OF EARTH
A YOUNG NAVVY KILLED
Vv OODVILLE, Last Night
A young man, twenty-two years of age, named Timothy Joseph Sullivan, was accidentally killed by a fall of earth at Kumeroa this morning. He was working on a AVoodville County road contract on the Upper Otawhau Road, whero there is a good deal ot excavating work to. do. Shortly after starting work, a big fall of earth occurred, which : mothered him up-to the neck. His mates, who were working close by, came to his assistance as soon as possible, but when released he vvai quite dead. All that is known about hinvis that he belonged to SeadOwns, near Temuka. The body has been brought into W oodville, where an inquest will be held to-morrow morning ADVANCE ELTHAM! ELTHAM, Last Night. The Eltham municipal gasworks, with a capacity of seven and a half million cubic feet per annum, costing about £IO,OOO, were oificially opened yesterday afternoon. The Municipal Town Hall, costing about £4OOO, salting 950, and fitted with complete stage accessories, was officially opened 'ast night by the Minister of Public Works. SOUTH CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD. TIMARU, Last Night. The Education Board to-day discussed the practice of withdrawing Roman- Catholic children from country school classes at certain times for religious instruction preparatory to confirmation. The Board decided that the practice could not be interfered with. < The Education Board now does its own repairs and painting. It- has at present in ite emrpioy ifour carpenters, thru-' painters', and two apprentices. AN explanation! TIMARU, Last Night. '.Brfiemjig tcf a cable to the: evening papers that the steamer Kainga, while on a reef, was attacked, by cannibals m German West ; Africa, Mr C. H. Mason, of Timaru, is a correspondent of Brooking, an exTimaruvian, who is "third engineer on the vessel. The last letter was received from London, when bound for New York. Brooking stated that the vessel had been aground for some hours on a sand Hank. This is probably the whole basic of the New York story.

The death occurred- this evening of Mr Hanwell Williams, at the age of 76 'years. The late Mt Williams came to Greyimouth in 1865, and was in business as a chemist until six years ago, when he was said to be , the oldest surviving •chemist in New Zealand. On March 23rd last he celebrated hi® , golden wadding. Deceased took a keen interest in the welfare of the town, and. was highly respected throughout the coast. He ieiwes a widow and three sons. KNYVETT COTTRT-MARTIAL. WELLINGTON, Last Night. . At the Knyvett court-martial, Colonel Wolfe said he was sorry to forward letter to headquarters. H# "thought Knyvett knew at tihe time that witness was anxious the letter should not go. Knyvett .oould not have misunderstood that witness considered it insubordinate.
Captain D&wison, ooun.sel for the prosecution, said the prosecution based its case upon the point that Rnyvett was warned of impropriety and insubordination.
Knyvett, in, his evidence, out-, lined the particulars of v the case, which aro familiar to the public. He admitted having been warned by "Oolonel Patterson that, tilie letter he seai.t- to headqunuiter.s was "pretty hot," and if he were not sure of his facts ,he ' would get into trouble. Colonel Wolfe had told him the same. Under cross-examination, Knyvett said he had no alternative but to make the charge.
Knyvett was still lender cross-ex-aimination when the coiu-ixoiartM adjourned till to-miorrow.
