PERSONAL.

The Rev. F. W. Isitt was presented at a W.C.T.U. gathering at Nelson last night with a cheque for £ll3, privately subscribed among his friend r, and co-workers in the movement in the Dominion.

Mr E. C. Isaac, Inspector of Manual and Technical Instruction, is paying an official visit to Masterton to-day.

Mr R. S. Warwick has been appointed sole-teacher at the Cross' Creek school;; Mr C. M. Blake teacher at Mangaone; Mr W. Fossette teacher at Pukehinau; and Miss Burbush assistant at Kaiparoro.

Councillor James Elliott, of Masterton, though covalescent is still too weak to attend to civic duties. His many friends hope that he will soon be restored to health.

Mr H. P. Green took up his duties as accountant to the Masterton Borough Council on Monday last.

During his visit to Masterton next week, the Acting-Prime , Minister (Hon. J. A. Carroll) will be the guest of His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine).

Mr David Crewe, ex-Mayor of Pahiatua, who is at present oh a visit to the Old Country, intends delivering a series.of lectures on New Zealand in the provincial townships, which he vvill illustrate with lantern slides.

Councillor H. J. Toogood was yesterday given leave of absence by the Masterton County Council during the period of his visit to the Old Country. An old and highly respected settler of the, Alfredton district, in the person of Mrs John Smith, died somewhat suddenly on Monday evening. Mi Alex. Murray, of "Waterfalls, had called at the house of the deceased lady on his road to Masterton in the afternoon. On his arrival at Eketahuna he learned, to his surprise, that Mrs Smith had suffered a stroke from which she passed away later in the evening. The' late Mrs Smith was a splendid type of a pioneer settler. With her husband she had. resided in the district from the early days, and her womanly instincts and genuine hospitality endeared her to a wide circle of friends. Besides her husband, she leaves a married son (Mr John Angus Smith), who lives on tiw farm at Forest Flat, and a daughter (Mrs Hennessv, of Pongaroa),. The deceased was about sixty-five years of
