' Mr J. R. Cole was the lecturer at St. Matthew's Club in Masterton last night, his subject being, "The Native Fauna in New Zealand," and "Ancient Maori Customs." The attention of the many members present never flagged as the lecturer passed from the origin and habits of one animal to another. In dealing with the customs of the Maoris, he was equally interesting. At the conclusion of his paper, several questions were asked, an answered. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Cole, and he was askec] to continue his paper at some future meeting. This he promised to do. Mr H. H. Donald has promised to give a paper on "Hockey" next Tuesday, and all hockey enthusiasts are fcivited to attend.

A. Chinaman was arrested in Wellington yesterday on a charge of opium-smoking. There are at present over 260 pupils attending classes at the Masterton Technical School.

Mr J. Gurus, Inspector of Public Health under the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, paid an official visit to Eketahuna yesterday.

At last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, several Councillors expressed tho hope that when the estimates were under con-* sideration steps would bo taken to increase the Mayor's honorarium. They considered that £SO was a very paltry sum.

Strang's woolshed, Glenside), and at Martinborough at an early date.

The gas manager reported as followfj at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council: —In connection with operations, of the past' /ear, full figures and details will be supplied and dealt with in my annual report accompanying the audited balance sheets and trading accounts. In the meantime, for the information of the Council, I may state that gas manufactured shows an increase of -1,127,700 cubic feet, and gas solcl per meter an increase of 1,641,200 ctabic feet, equal to 7.7 per cent," which, under the condition of business holding in Masterton, may be considered satisfactory. The reduction in the price of gas made at the commencement of the year is equivalent to a loss of £474 odd. The total output of gas fop the twelve months was 36,267,100 cubic feet. The number of meters, in actual use is 1000. Ninety-seven new customers have been connected to the mains.
