NEW ZEALAND FARMERS' UNION.

THE LEVIN BRANCH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) LEVIN, Last Night. The Levin branch of the Farmers' Union has resolved to forward a remit to the annual Conference of the "Union protesting against the rating of farmers on unimproved value of their lands, instead of on income as merchants and others are. The branch suggests that, farmers should bo taxed five per cent on the capital value of their holdings after deducting all encumberances in .the shape of mortgages. The branch heartily supports Mr Sedgwick's immigrant scheme. It protested against the Maori Council's right to register dogs, expressing the view that the dual right possessed by Maori Councils and pakeha local bodies led to looseness and the task of tracing sheep-worrying dogs more difficult than it n>- 1 be. Tho meeting expressed tim opinion that the Union should take no official part in regard to either political' party as to do so would bo disastrous. I It* was resolved that the Levin branch jrotests against any official endorsement bv tho Union of either tho Farmers Protection League or the political League of Canterbury or Auckland branch.

It was also affirmed that no further labour legislation should be passed.
