FENCES ON ROADS.

A NA7EONAL PROBLEM. '{ * MENACE TO TRAVELLING STOCK. At the me:ting of the Masterton branch of tha Farmers' Union on Saturday afternoon last, Mr R. B. McKenzie introduced the question of > the bad .otato. of repair ,in which boundary fences were kept in various parts of the country. This was a very great a:moyance to those who travelled stock. He thought the County Councils shouldjbe asked to take the matter up, and he moved that the question be a remit to the Provincial Conference. Mr J. C. Cooper ventured the opinion that the ■difficulty arose more in to leaseholds than to freefiolds. Mr W. L. Falconer suggested that the remedy would be the .procuring of a better class of dogs by those driving stock. Mr W. Perry pointed out that "this was a very big question. It was a national issue, and would probably not be entertained by the Con- , Terence-. / , Mr McKenzie pointed out tiat the fact that the matter was of national importance was the more reason that it should be discussed by the Union. Mr J. C. Cooper pointed out that "the question laffe&ed the fundamental of the right of ownership. ▼He did not think they should place restrictions upon private ownership. After further discussion, Mr McKenzie decided not to press the matter further, and the motion -was withdrawn.
