RESIGNED HIS POSITION
United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 3, 9.30 a.m.) PEKING, May 3. Sir Robert Hart has definitely resigned his position, which will ho taken bv Mr Aglen. '"Sir Robert Hart, G.C.M.G., K.C.M.G., M.A., LL.D., InspectorGeneral of Customs in the service of the Chinese Government since 1863, is among the most interesting personalities of the British Empire, Bom in Ireland 76 years ago, he, at an early age, entered the Concular service in China in 1854, and held some important posts, until in 1859 he was granted special permission to resign and accept an appointment in the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs. He rose quickly to the highest offices, and has been regarded as one of the strongest men in the East. He has received over twenty decorations, from practically every one of the great Powers of the world. His influence in the East is beyond calculation, but 't is known that his great power has always been exerted in the direction of peace, progress, prosperity, enlightenment and clean government.
