From the time they left New Zealand till they decided to return, they encountered extremely rough weather and a succession of gales. The ship was continually awash. On arrival off Victoria Land they proceeded along the coast to Lat 74 South, Long. 171 East, and saw nothing but icebergs, snow and penguins. After four days' buffeting and failing to make a landing, owing to large quantities of ice, they decided to return. The officers' declare that the expedition is purely scientific, and they have no intention to attempt to reach the Pole. They propose to stay in Sydney for some time, refitting and renewing their provisions, and will make another attempt to reach the Polar regions in the spring.

DR. MAWSON'S SCHEME. (Received May 2, 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, May 1. The Danish Government is purchasing fifty Greenland dogs on behalf of Dr. Mawson, and will send them direct to Australia. Dr. Mawson will take an aeroplane selected by Mr Grahame-White, who is arranging details.
