CONGRATULATORY SPEECHES.

At the first meeting last night of the newly-elected. Mastcrton Borough Council, His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Goradine) congratulated t?ie Councillors who had been re-elected on having the continued confidence of the public, and:' the new members upon having secured their seats. The speaker said he had only one regret, and that was that all the chairs were not filled, Cr Elliott being on a bed of sickness, and he was sure all would join an the regret he felt, The Mayor explained that the position of a Councillor was a, very responsible one. The most important thing war, always to keep the mind on the point that they were there to do their best in the interests of the people. Many different opinions were sometimes expressed at the meetings, but each Councillor, should vote on every question in the way in which he considered to be right. Each Councillor; must give the others "the credit of -doing the best they could for the town. A most important thing was that the Councillors should have a clear view of a matter before voting. Cr O'Leary said his desire was to forward the interests of the town and ratepayers, particularly the latter. He had no doubt that with Mr Coradin© at the head of affairs the best things would be done. Cr O'Leary wished the Mayor a happy and prosperous term of office. Cr Temple, as an old Councillor, congratulated Mr Coradine on being returned unopposed. Be felt sorry that Mr Morris had been unseated. he was confident that Mr Donald, who had filled his chair, would do well if he aspired to the mark of Cr Moms, who did good work whale on the Council. Mr Temple extended a hearty welcome to the new Councillors. They would probably get many hard hits inside the Chamber, but the Councillors were always the best of friends after the : meetings.

Cr Hoar also welcomed the new Councillors, stating that he was sxire they would all get on amicably. Cr Candy thanked the Mayor and Councillors for their hearty welcome, and expressed the hope that he would be enabled to do good work under Mr Coradine's guidance. Cr Donald said that he was very thankful for the welcome extended to him, and he hoped that bis term of office would be a useful one. Cr Ewington thanked the Mayor for the words lie had spoken about. the old Councillors. He was very pleased to see Mr Coradine returned to the Mayoral chair. With regard to the new Councillors, he felt sure that they were fully worthy of their positions. Or Ewington was gratified to note that Cr Temple had made reference to Mr Morris. He was a man who had done good services to the town, and he was sorry to see \ he had been defeated. Or Prentice said he would do all in his power to assist the Mayor, but he would also oppose him when he i (the speaker) thought he was wrong. He was glad to see. there was new blood in the Council. Cr Pragnell congratulated the, Mayor on having been returned, and he said that there was no man in Master ton more deserving of such a compliment. He was of opinion that the electors had made a good 'Selection of Councillors. His Worship the Mayor thanked the Councillors for their kind words. He also expressed regret at the defeat of Mr Morris. He moved "That this Council appreciates the services of Mr Morris on the Council, and hopes to see him at some future date returned: again to office." Cr Temple seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
