A "GEORGE" FUND.
APPEAL THROUGH THE GOVERNOR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. The following has been received from His Excellency the Governor: — "A project has been set on foot, and is meeting with wide acceptance at Home, to ask those of His Majesty's subjects in every part of the British Empire whd bear the Christian name of 'George' to unite in sending a gift to His Majesty on the occasion qf the forthcoming Coronation. An extent sive committee has' been formed to carry but the scheme, composed of the following:—-Lord Curzon, Earl Grey, Lord George Hamilton, Sir George Reid, Earl Stradbroke, Admiral Sir George Warrender, .The above'com:mittee have already formed an organisation in each County at Home to carry out the work, and have written me, as they have to the Governors in J the other Dominions, asking me to take what steps I can to bring the project before those in NeAv Zealand who bear the name of 'George.' and shus afford them an opportunity, if they should feel so disposed, of joining in the gift. In order that as many persons as possible may be able to do so, it is proposed that subscriptions be accepted from a penny up to £5. The list of names and donors, but not the amount given by each, will be presented to the King. The proposal has only just come to hand by the mail, leaving only a few weeks before the subscription list ckres on June Ist. The time, therefore, is so limited that ifc does not permit of any arrangement? being suggested in the nature of an effective organisation throughout the. different districts of New Zealand for collecting subscriptions. I am, therefore, compelled to confine myself to making public this appeal through the courtesv of the Press to all those who may wish to join the movement, to enable them to send, with their name and addressy subscriptions to the 'George fund,' Bank of New Zealand, Wellington. The fund will close and the results will be cabled Home on ' the Ist June. Subsequently a list, of all donors, with their addresses in New Zealand, will be forwarded 'to His Majesty the King."
