MAKING THE RAILWAYS PAY.

In pursuance of his policy of making the railways pay, the Minister has decided to restrict the goods traffic at sundry stations to certain days of the week. From a railway revenue point of view this may be a correct tiling. When it is considered, however, that the primary object of the railways is to assist in the development of the country, the restriction now being imposed can be viewed only in the light of an imp-xT.iaent, and a breach of faith with those who have taken up land in sparsely-sett-led districts. The Hon. J. A. Millar could not have taken a more unpopular step than that just announced, and he will speedily find that he has brought a hornet's nest around his head.
