INSURANCE ASSOCIATION

ELTHAM, Last Njgjni.

The sixth annual meeting of the Taranaki Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Association was held to-day. The report showed tho premiums far the year to have heen £1034 10s 7d, being £230 Is 8d less than the previous year. This was due to a reduction of the rate of premiums. Insurance liability amounted to £212,424, .an increase of £22,824. The policies .number 801, with a general average of about £265, against £262 for the previous year. Fire losses for the year amounted to £164 16s 6d. The cash reserve totals £3068 6s sd, being : £6lO 3s 3d in advance of the previous year. iTh.3 total increase in assets is £1335 12s 3d.

CHARGE OF ASSAULT

ASHBURTON, Last Night.

At the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr V. G. Day, S.M., Charles Reid charged Mr Hugo Friedlander with assaulting him by striking him with a walking stick at a meeting of the Ash burton Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on April 3rd. Counsel for Friedlander mada an apology to Reid for what had been done, or at least he reiterated the public apology Friedlander had made at a recent public meeting, and that he regretted that although he had been insulted that he had not acted more gentlemanly and in a more dignified way. Counsel for the prosecution declined to accept this and would, not allow the case to drop. The evidence given was a recapitulation of tnat published of the fracas, and in giving judgment the Magistrate said that the whole incident was ver? trvial, end that ninety-nine per <-<":t of men who wen repeatedly called iinrs by ether nen would hav • acted as Fnrdlandev had done. Reid's dignity was more hurt than his body, and he would dismi.s the case under Section 92 of the Justices of the Peace 1 ct, 1908, defendant to pay costs.

A special meeting of th© "Merchant Sen-ice Guild was held at Wellington this afternoon to consider proposals submitted by the Union Steamship in regard to the conditions of «m»loyment. The meeting considered the proposals of the " .company •ere too vague and indefinite, and was decided to refer this dispute to tho Conciliation Council with a view to it eventually being taken to the Court of Arbitration.

AN APPEAL UPHELD. WESTPORT,.Last Night. The judgment- of, Justice Pehniston in the Licensing eases, Police v. Martin Ryan and Police v.
